Tottenham had begun talks over a new deal prior to Townsend's international exploits although it is thought that the new deal contains a series of performance-related clauses that would reward Townsend for continuing his development.

A statement from Tottenham said: "We are delighted to announce that Andros Townsend has signed a new four-year contract at the club"

The player tweeted: "Delighted to have signed a new contract with Spurs! The perfect end to the perfect week! Now let's get three points on Sunday."
